Artist Research

Standards:

2I) Evaluates teaching resources and materials for appropriateness as related to curricular content and each student’s needs;

Description: We researched the contemporary artist Hattie Stewart and considered how we could use their work in a visual art classroom. We created an informational presentation on the findings of the artist and their artwork.

Rationale: The purpose of this presentation and findings are to research new artists and art styles while thinking about how this data is useful in a classroom. We found that Hattie Stewart is a London-based Illustrator and utilizes doodling as a form of art. We researched and learned about the benefits of doodling and the positive impact it has on students.

Elementary Lesson Plan

Standards:

VA: Cr1.2.3a) Apply knowledge of available resources, tools, and technologies to investigate personal ideas through the art-making process.

VA: Cr2.2.3a) Demonstrate an understanding of the safe and proficient use of materials, tools, and equipment for a variety of artistic processes.

VA: Cr2.3.3a) Individually or collaboratively construct representations, diagrams, or maps of places that are part of everyday life.

Description: We developed a full articulated visual arts lesson plan for elementary school students that aligns with the state standards for visual arts.

Rationale: This lesson incorporates ideas of art in the community and public spaces. Students are introduced to Project Backboard, an organization that collaborates with artists to revamp run-down basketball courts by coming together to paint and ultimately create murals. The students will then create their own versions of basketball courts utilizing symmetry for the court floor plan and asymmetric designs. This lesson will get students thinking about art and its influence on a community.
