Artwork/Artist Statement

Standards:

IPTS (2013) STANDARD 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge - The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.

Description: Our unit was a digital media project complied of two mini projects; one being a typography sketch and vinyl sticker and the other being a surrealism collage focusing on a word of importance to iterate the power of communication. I focused on the typography section of the project and provided an example of the sketching portion.  I essentially created my own font that I feel further visualized the feeling of the word 'power'. Then through an artist statement, I was able to further explain my process and decision making.

Rationale: The purpose of this sketch was to visualize a word that is important to me, the word being 'power.' I created a sketch where I used typography elements like baseline, x-height, layering, etc. Taking inspiration from designer and muralist Ricardo Gonzalez, I brought my own personal experience when visualizing the word 'power'. I sketched sharp edges and rigid lines that resembles what 'power' means to me. I wrote a thorough artist statement to model to the students what an artist statement would looks like. In my artist statement I explain the message, application of vocabulary, and influences in my artwork.

Unit Plan

Standards:

IPTS (2013) - STANDARD 1 - Teaching Diverse Students - The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.

Description: Our unit plan is designed for a beginner digital media art class. This elective course features freshman, sophomore, juniors, and seniors of varying artistic skill levels. We will be teaching students about artists Ricardo Gonzalez and Vanessa Rivera. Taking inspiration, students are to choose a word of importance in relation to their values. Using the program Sketchbook, students will design a word using typography vocabulary, creating a vinyl sticker of their design, and then create a surrealist collage that visualizes such word.

Rationale: We want students to think of communicating and how we can visualize and give a deeper meaning to a word. We can do this by sketching a word that contains features to emphasize the message like sharp or round edges. Students can also create meaning and communication through a surrealist collage that creatively visualizes the word without writing it.

Formative and Summative Assessment and Rubric

Standards:

PTS (2013) -STANDARD 7 - Assessment - The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessment for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.

Description: We are assessing students ability to articulate and brainstorm ideas for setting the foundation of their project. Students are to choose a word of importance and through the formative assessments of word maps students can more specifically break down descriptors for their words. As a summative assessment, students will be answering a questionnaire that captures their journey throughout. They are to describe their word, give reasoning for their decision making and relate their work back to the objectives. The students are to turn in the word maps, typographic representation of their word, vinyl sticker, surrealist collage, and summative questionnaire that will be graded with a rubric following the objective guidelines.

Rationale: Formative assessments are created through word maps to allow students a space to brainstorm and write their thoughts. This should aid as a resource throughout the whole project. The summative assessment allows both the teacher and student to summarize and explain their intent. this allows for a great place to reflect. Both assessments are to be graded with the rubric in hand.
