6th/7th/8th Unit Plan - Shoe Design

Standards: IPTS (2013) STANDARD 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge - The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.

IPTS (2013) STANDARD 5 - Instructional Delivery - The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. The teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.

 

Description: Students are able to learn about shoe designing, establish a cohesive color palette, brand imagery, and include highlights and shadows to create a realistic food or candy branded sneaker.

Rationale: Students had individualistic choice in depicting their brand. They each used a guided planning worksheet to establish a brand, imagery, shoe design/style, color palette, etc. Students then used stencils as needed to begin their designing. Using oil pastels and color pencils students were able to use gradient techniques to create a realistic design.

9th-12th Unit Plan - Wheel Mugs

Description: Students will be able to wheel throw four functional ceramic mugs on the wheel within 3-4 weeks. Students will master essential wheel-throwing techniques including clay attachment, centering, opening, pulling up walls, shaping, proper removal, trimming, and handle attachment. Through step by step teacher-led demonstrations and guided practice, students will successfully select their best mug demonstrating symmetry, a defined shape, smooth trimmed edges, lightweight, and a securely attached pulled or coiled handle supported by coils.

Rationale: Students were able to learn wheel throwing techniques and routines to create individualized mugs resembling rounded, angles, or straight mug styles. Through demonstration and hands on practicing, students were able to master and fire a mug of choice.

Formative & Summative

Description: 6th/7th/8th grade students used a design planning worksheet to encourage their shoe design projects as a formative for the teacher to check for understanding and provide proper guidance. 

Rationale: The formative assessment done through a physical planning worksheet, allowed students to ideate and begin thinking creatively. It aalso served as aa guideline for the teacher to ensure students are understanding the project goals. I was also able to use these planning worksheets as aa guide for providing proper imagery needed for each student's brand of choice. The summative for this project is completion of the project in relation to achieving the projects objective and district rubric.

Description: 9th-12th ceramic students used a guided worksheet about to project objective and requirements This served as a formative for the teacher to check for student understanding. The students also collectively completed in a claassroom kahoot in relation to wheel throwing setup and cleaning routines. 

Rationale: The formative assessment offered students the opportunity to answer questions independently while still offering the teacher a collective consensus for student understanding. It offered an entertaining way to recap and review the new classroom expectations regarding the potter's wheel. The summative for this unit plan was through final project submission and a wheel mug journal where students were able to review their experience and learning outcomes.

IPTS (2013) STANDARD 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy - The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism, provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.

 

Description: I attended NAEA's Conference in Minneapolis along with several student chapter members. This experience allowed me to attend workshops in relation to hiring, interview tips and advice from district hiring committees. It was definitely interesting to attend all workshops with more experience in student teaching and being able to take away and apply information for realistically. 


Rationale: This was an awesome opportunity to relate to the content and attend worksops that I felt I could learn more from and apply to my student teaching experience. I attended some on classroom management workshops wand heard from others about their tips to succeed.

Description: I was selected to display two personal works of art at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago Illinois.


Rationale: Selected by Juror Archana Shekara, I had the pleasure of being apart of Mine, Yours, Ours; Familial Kitchen Stories. It was a great experience to have work displayed alongside several artists coming from different mediums all embracing the same idea; culture.
